About the Research
This research explores the evolution of mental health understanding, tracing the journey from ancient supernatural beliefs to modern scientific approaches, aiming to provide a comprehensive historical overview of how mental illness has been perceived and treated across different eras.
Explore how the concept of mental health has changed throughout history. It begins by investigating ancient societies' beliefs, such as attributing mental illness to demonic possession, celestial forces, and superstitions. The research will document significant shifts from supernatural models to biological explanations with figures like Hippocrates and Galen, who introduced early theories of bodily imbalances as causes of mental illness. Additionally, this project covers the rise of psychological approaches in the 19th and 20th centuries, focusing on key developments such as psychoanalysis, behaviorism, and humanism.
This research will contribute to a deeper understanding of the historical context behind today’s mental health care systems.
